Isn’t The AO The Other Way – 2023-04-28

AO: Hope
QiC: Manhole
Pax Count: 4
Pax List: Lance, Manhole, Mountain Dew, Purple Cow
FNG Count: 0
Downrange: N/A

4 of us gathered at the Shepherds Inn (mostly on time) and put in some work. We hoped for a return from Nature Boy and Short Order, but alas it was not be this week. 0530 struck and we put in the work.

Warm up: (all IC and X15 – 2 Rounds)

  • SSH, Imperial Walkers, Cotton Pickers, Low Slow Squats, Floyd Mayweathers
  • End of 1st round, 15 large arm circles (forwards and back), End of 2nd round, Morocan night clubs (15 each x2, 1st on the right leg, then on the left)

Seeing no other pax, YHC led the crew on a field trip. we ran up Ivan Allen and across Luckie Street and over to the corner of the park.

We paused at the benches for 3 rounds of 3 exercises (all IC, and X12, 10 and 8)

  • Incline Merkins, Dips and Squats (mumble chatter was heard)

We moseyed on, up Park Ave and on to Marietta for a bit to Andrew Young Int’l and up to the front of GWC.

We paused again for an 11, Step Ups and Derkins. (lots of grunting). After planking for the 6 we rolled on, and as we approached the left turn to MBS, Purple Cow stated that he could not help but notice we running further away from the AO and that time was running short. I reminded the PAX that this was not my 1st rodeo. We rolled on, around the side of MBS, making a left on to Centenial Olympic Park Dr and back down to Marietta and across to the park, where we paused again. YHC asked the PAX to give what they had left, max Derkins, and everyone put in a great effort.

As time was short, we double timed it back to Park Ave and Luckie St and finally back to Ivan Allen and the Mission.

(Admittedly, YHC did go over by about 90 seconds)

CoT:

We were actually taken out by one of the men doing good work each and every day at the Mission. I believe his name is Bryan. We met him when we 1st launched the AO. He hails from Detroit and his claim is that he has a PhD in homelessness and addiction/recovery, having lived on the streets through the Detroit winters for 20 years, and having now been clean for and giving back for more than 10 years.

Bryan recounted the tale about “a man being down in a hole”, and the brother who helps him get out. Love that one. He reminded us, that despite our best efforts, those we are encouraging have to want to get better, and that we can only put ourselves out there. Humbling but true.
